My top podcasts of 2009
I just want to share a few podcasts from 2009 that have served me well through my exercise regime, running, driving across the UK and just hanging around the house.
Fist off there’s Beats in Space , thanks to Tim Sweeney for such great long mixes of LCD soundsystem esq NY mixes and guest DJ’s.
Next up it’s Hospital records (London Electricity) , fantastic Drum and Bass that...
Sony ebook reader
Just received my Sony ebook reader, PRS 300. What a fab piece of tech!
Yes it’s basic, has no wifi, no search facility and limited space but 350 odd books including PDF’s. The E ink is smooth and looks great although like a book you need ambient light.
The page turning rate can be a little slow when the machine has to ‘convert’ the text from PDF, nothing major.
A...
Sicamp: Scotland » Flock Local →
Just checking out some of the great social sites designed through the social innovation camps, I’m real impressed with the flock local idea:
Flock Local matches volunteers with local activities.
Volunteering often requires an ongoing commitment. But many people just don’t have the time to commit to a long-term project. And sometimes there is an urgent need for volunteers and no easy way...

Mendeley
I’ve just started to use Mendeley, which as the team describe:
Mendeley is a combination of a desktop application and a website which helps you manage, share and discover both content and contacts in research.
Basically the application allows you to upload all or as many as 500mb (or more if you’re nice to the team) of pdf’s, documents, published papers etc and to share these...

David makes an interesting point about the need to promote the use of blogging and other forms of social media to make sense of the incredible amount of data existing in society today. It’s a shame that in the UK, like many countries, there’s still a reluctance from top down authorities who are stuck behind ancient IT frameworks, to trust others i.e the public to get on with sorting...

Using Evernote for research work
I’ve been a big fan of Evernote for some time but did struggle at first to find the ideal workflow and ‘reason’ to use the programme.
Since I began my MA course the application has been a first class assistant in my assignment work.
Everything from clipping snippets of info from web pages, attaching pdf’s, word docs, importing delicious bookmarking data and note taking...
I’m quite pleased with a productive 6 hours on my MA assignment today!

The TED conference says it’s dedicated to “ideas worth spreading,” and this app — which provides access to TED demos and talks via your iPhone or iPod touch — makes spreading those ideas as simple as possible.
